It's been another busy week of learning in Year 1.
In phonics we have recapped some of trigraphs such as air, ure and ear , as well ast he ow, igh and oo family. We practised reading these as part of our comprehension and using our sound buttons to decode unfamiliar words.
We worked hard with our English and practised using the plural suffixes ' s' and ' es' when writing about animals. We have been working hard to write independently remembering what makes a super sentence.
In topic time we consolidated our knowledge of the United Kingdom including the countries and seas surrounding it.
During Maths we continued to work on numbers up to 100 making numbers up to 100 using diennes,as well as filling in numbers on a number line adding 1 more/1 less. We thought about 2 digit numbers that have the same number of 10's using our place value knowledge.
We enjoyed recapping our knowledge of the animals groups in Let's Learn and practically made a map of our class, some of us drew a plan too! We played guess the number on the 100 square.
In Science we compared and grouped animals using what we have learnt this half term.
It's been a busy half term and we all deserve a well earned sunny half term holiday.
Well done Year 1, see you all in June when it's officially the Summer.
What a wonderful week in Year 1.

During our maths sessions we have been working with numbers up to 100. We have counted backwards and forwards. We have thought about place value and partitioned these into tens and ones. We have recorded this in a part- part whole model.
In phonics we have recapped on syllables and compound words. We have used our phonic knowledge to read and spell these in a sentences.
During topic time we consolidated our learning in geography and landmarks in the United Kingdom. We enjoyed making mini 3D models of famous landmarks using different resources.

We have enjoyed listening to the story ' Owl Babies' and making a simple story map to remember it how to retell it.
In maths we have been focusing on multiplication and division this week. We have recorded arrays remembering rows go across and columns go down i.e 3 rows of 2 is 6, and showing this as an image. We have recapped on doubling numbers as well as sharing into equal groups practically.
As part of our topic work we thought about the habitat of an insect and how we can help them by creating bug hotels in our environment. We enjoyed looking at the bug hotels in our school grounds. We designed our own bug hotels using different resources or drawing our ideas. As well as this we have thought about the birds in the local habitat and ones we might see in our gardens or when we are out and about. We found out some fantastic facts.

We enjoyed developing our skills in art to create a torn art seascape using a collage technique, scissors were not allowed! It was really fun creating this artwork and so effective overlaying coloured paper and tissue paper.
We have been marvellous mathematicians using blank number lines to estimate where number from 0-10 and 0- 20 are placed. We used our place value and number knowledge to help us and were able to explain our ideas using mathematical language such as 'it's greater or less than' or ' it comes after 10 because 10 is half way between 0 and 20''. We used the skill of estimating to guess the closest position of the numbers on the blank number lines. We compared numbers and practised our knowledge of place value practically.

Our tricky words are put, pull and push and we realised that the 'u' makes the wrong sound when we sound it in these words.
In maths we have continued to explore place values of numbers to from 11- 20. We have enjoyed playing different games making numbers to 20 using 10 frames to race to 20, as well as snap games that show the teen numbers in pictures. We have used number lines to count backwards and forwards and worked how 1 more and I less when the numbers have been missing!

We have enjoyed playing number snap with our teen numbers and phonic bingo. We have enjoyed exploring how to plant seeds and understand what they need to grow. Our English focus this week was to learn about 2 new suffixes er and est that are added to the end of adjectives to compare two things. We learnt that er compares 2 things ( tall and taller ) and est compares 3 things ( tall taller tallest) . We wrote some supper sentences using these suffixes .
We have been trying really hard to practise our weekly spellings and become ' Super Spellers'. Keep up the good work.
