Year 1 blog posts

Well it's been a busy week!

We have had fun during Let's Learn this week from making bird feeders, exploring the primary colours to make new colours, practising reading words with our phonics and number bonds to 10 and beyond.

In phonics we have been learning more sounds from the 'ur' family such as er, ir and ear. We practised saying, reading and spelling words with these sounds.

In maths we have been practising counting to add to numbers, using visual prompts, practical resources or number lines. We consolidated our knowledge of number bonds to 20.

In Jigsaw during our Dreams and Goals session we thought about ' stretchy learning ' which helps to makes steps towards our goals.

PE has been really fun. We have  enjoyed exploring the equipment safely using the large apparatus and climbing frame. We have practised transitioning from narrow to curled shapes travelling across the apparatus.

As part of our DT  we have been  designing our own Fruity surprise  ready to make on Tuesday next week. The children have  choose from up to three fruits they would like to add to make this delicious healthy treat.

In Computing  we have been  looking at the children's first page of their animated story on purple mash and learning how to add a background and animation to their story.

We have tried really hard in handwriting and been practising formation of the tunnel family making sure we start in the right place using our special yellow lines.

Well done everyone for working so hard again this week. Enjoy a relaxing weekend.

Wow what a week! We are already half way through this half term it's whizzing by.

Another jam packed week of learning in Year 1. We have enjoyed all the activities in Let's Learn and been thinking about how we impact the environment and can help improve it by recycling, reducing and reusing different items and materials so they don't end up in landfill. We enjoyed developing our skills in art to create a torn art seascape using a collage technique, scissors were not allowed! It was really fun creating this artwork and so effective overlaying coloured paper and tissue paper.

We have been marvellous mathematicians using blank number lines to estimate where number from 0-10 and 0- 20 are placed. We used our place value and number knowledge to help us and were able to explain our ideas using mathematical language such as 'it's greater  or less than'  or ' it comes after 10 because 10 is half way between 0 and 20''. We used the skill of estimating to guess the closest position of the numbers on the blank number lines. We compared numbers and practised our knowledge of place value practically.

In phonics we have been learning about the phase 5 sounds in the ' or' family. We have learnt aw as in straw, au  as in astronaut and al as in ball. We practised spelling and writing sentences using these words. Our tricky words this week are ' here' and ' there'. We noticed some similarities in the to help us how  to spell these words ? Can you spot them ?

We really enjoyed learning about Grace Darling and her heroic act of saving 9 sailors on a very stormy night. This was as incredibly brave thing to do. We used our knowledge of the 'ed' suffix and to write sentences  about this amazing brave event in  history.

In Science we thought about how to help look after and show respect for our planet by litter picking. We learnt how important it is to put our rubbish or recycle it when we are  out and about.

During gymnastics this we focused on curled shapes which included tucked rolls and jumps off the of the apparatus. We were demonstrating being champion gymnasts by landing safely and holding clear shapes. We are really enjoying our gymnastic sessions.

Well done on a fantastic week Year 1. We hope you have a lovely weekend.

What a fantastic week we have had in Year 1.

We have enjoyed learning more about the countries that are part of the United Kingdom and the seas and oceans that surround our islands.

During phonics we have been learning some more sounds in the long vowel oo family ; ew , ue, split digraph u -e and u and oul. We have practised learning to spell words using these sounds and put them into sentences. Our tricky words are put, pull and push and we realised that the 'u' makes the wrong sound when we sound it in these words.

In maths we have continued to explore place values of numbers to from 11- 20.  We have enjoyed playing different games making numbers to 20 using 10 frames to race to 20, as well as snap games that show the teen numbers in pictures. We have used number lines to count backwards and forwards and worked how 1 more and  I less when the numbers have been missing!

During Let's learning with have looked at artwork by Vincent Van Gog and been detectives looking for the element of colour in his artwork. We have enjoyed playing number snap with our teen numbers and phonic bingo. We have enjoyed exploring how to plant seeds and understand what they need to grow. Our English focus this week was to learn about 2 new suffixes er and est that are added to the end of adjectives to compare two things. We learnt that er compares 2 things ( tall and taller ) and est compares 3 things ( tall taller tallest) . We wrote some supper sentences using these suffixes .

We have been trying really hard to practise our weekly spellings and become ' Super Spellers'. Keep up the good work.

During computing we learnt about animated stories and are looking forward to creating our own on purple mash soon.

We have loved our PE this week. In gymnastics we were 'moving like a champion'  creating high and low shapes on while moving on the equipment. We have focused on making wide, narrow and curled shapes with our bodies.

We very lucky enough to have a workshop with some people from AFCB who talked about how to keep healthy and look after our well being. They talked about the importance of healthy eating, exercise and getting a good's night sleep.  This was a lovely surprise which we enjoyed very much especially if you are ' Cherries Fan' like Mr Coakes !

Well done Year 1, what a busy week it has been. You deserve a rest ready for a new week.

Enjoy your weekend everyone.
