The Music 'Big Ideas'

The ‘Big Ideas’ relate to elements within a subject discipline or refer to important concepts that contribute to pupils’ personal and social development. It is essential that the ‘Big Ideas’ within each subject are understood by the children and become part of their common classroom language. In music, these 'Big Ideas' are:

  • Appraising
  • Experimentation
  • Performance

Music intent, implementation & impact

Year 6 Collaborates with Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra! This week, Year 6 had the incredible opportunity to work with musicians from the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, thanks to our amazing music hub partner, Soundstorm. Following an inspiring lyric-writing workshop led by Hazel Gould, the children teamed up with award-winning composer James Redwood to help create a brand-new composition. This exciting piece will be premiered by the BSO at their Explore the Orchestra concert in May next year. Our pupils shone throughout the experience, impressing our visitors with their creativity and musical talent. Some remarkable talent was spotted - well done, Year 6!

Well done to all of the bands that took part in the Rock Steady concert last Friday. You rocked!

We had a visit from The Chris Woods Groove Orchestra in partnership with SoundStorm Music Education Agency today. He showed the children how to make different beats & sounds on the guitar. The children thoroughly enjoy stamping their feet & clapping their hands to the beat!

In partnership with Soundstorm music education hub, Heatherlands were delighted to welcome King Brass to our school for two incredible performances! King Brass are a fun 5 piece brass-band that deliver workshops and perform a range of family classics on a range of brass instruments, vocals and percussion. The highlight of the band is an enormous sousaphone (like a big tuba) which was bigger than some of the children! The children enjoyed clapping along and even playing along on some percussion instruments of their own. What a treat!
